Pluto, the Wonder Dog
September 30, 2001
I used to doubt that Pluto, our Shepherd/Doberman, could
understand English. But my husband, Karl, maintains that he always converses
with Pluto to discuss feelings or to prepare him for an event.
One evening, I wasnıt feeling too well but was determined
to attend a program at the Atlanta Symphony with a couple of friends.
Karl stayed home & wisely went to bed early. There was a long line outside
Symphony Hall and I was probably a little dehydrated by the time I sat
down.
Halfway into the evening, I fainted in my seat and a woman
behind me dramatically shouted, "Is there a doctor in the house!?" I
was carried out to the lobby where EMTıs were waiting and whisked me
off to the emergency room at Piedmont Hospital for IV fluids & a general
check-up.
My friends, who followed in their car, frantically called
my husband to have him meet us at the hospital. But I knew Karl wouldnıt
hear the phone since he closes the bedroom door and turns on a sleep
machine to drown out any street noise. They called & called, leaving
several messages which went unanswered.
Yet Pluto could hear these messages and he obviously sensed
the urgency of the situation. He nosed his way into the bedroom & woke
up Karl. However, Karl ignored him and went back to sleep. Undaunted,
faithful Pluto repeated his action, nosed the door open & put his snout
in Karlıs sleepy face until he got up. This time he heard the latest
message being left on the answering machine, picked up the phone, &
then rushed to the hospital.
I was just fine after some fluids but I have Pluto to
thank for responding to the emergency. Now I know without question that
he understands not only English but knows when he is needed to perform
emergency tasks. He is truly a gift. That is why Pluto is the center
of our universe.

We are very sad to say that our best friend for over 14
years, our wonder-dog & hero has passed away. A year ago, we thought
Pluto was ready to pass, but he rallied for another yearthanks
to the good folks at Loving Touch Animal Center.
He was loved by many from Grant Park to Alaska. Most kids
in the neighborhood knew him by name & no one was afraid of him after
he gave his lick of approval. We were lucky to have known him because
he loved everyone unconditionally (except the UPS truck).
