July 4th and Summer time hazards

No July 4th celebration is complete without the traditional Bar-B-Que with all the fixin's!  But a little precaution is warranted when we have four-legged family members at the party.  "Almost without fail, we have cases of vomiting, diarrhea, obstruction and/or pancreatitis following holidays celebrated with food, such as Thanksgiving, Christmas and Independence Day," says Dr. Michelle.  "That is," she adds "if the local emergency clinics don't get them first."
If your pet is invited to the festivities, be sure to ask other guests to not slip goodies to your pet.  A little here and there, add up rather quickly into an unaccustomed diet change- the kind that results in a lot of clean-up for you the next day and perhaps dollars out of your wallet.  READ MORE
Hot, Hot, Hot!

June presented us with unusually hot tempera-tures, and a record breaking string of 90 plus degree days.  With the traditional hottest months of Summer still to come, it is time to turn our minds to how the heat affects our canine friends.  Humans have an efficient cooling system- sweating.  As sweat collects on our skin it evaporates into the atmosphere which reduces our skin surface temperature, but even this system has its drawbacks.  With our Southeast "wet heat", the higher the humidity concentration the less our sweat evaporates.  The use of fans improves air circulation and evaporation- that's why they feel SO good!
On the other hand, dogs lose excess heat through panting and through the pads of their feet.  READ MORE

Cheyenne Needs Some Helping Hands

Cheyenne, her Cocker Spaniel mother and four littermates were found in the Chattsworth, Georgia area by a dump site.  The mother and pups were taken under the wing of Cocker Spaniel Rescue of Georgia (CSRG) and foster dad, Matt Pickett.  In the mean time, the puppies fell ill and were diagnosed with Parvo, upper respiratory infections and roundworm infestations.  Little Cheyenne almost died from the Parvo due to anemia caused by uncontrollable bloody diarrhea.  But she did pull through and began to play again with her also-recovering littermates.  But then a strange thing happened- about a week after her recovery, her foster dad awoke to find that Cheyenne suddenly could not rise or walk.  READ MORE

Loving Touch welcomes groomer, Dorsey McBride!

LTAClogo Dorsey learned grooming as an apprentice to Atlanta Magazine's 2007 Groomer of the Year. He has worked extensively with older dogs as well as first time pups.  "The most important thing for a groomer to remember is that dogs respond best when they are respected," says Dorsey. "I try to make the grooming experience as stress free as possible, and in turn my clients get a happy dog at the end of the day."
Dorsey will be offering full service grooming two days a week at Loving Touch's Stone Mountain location- from simple baths to more elaborate grooms, as well as additional services such as nail trimming, ear cleaning, anal gland expression and teeth brushing.  READ MORE
